How to post to Instagram with ChatGPT Reels from a chat, with your approval

ChatGPT cannot reach Instagram on its own: it needs a plugin that holds your Instagram connection. Install the official Upload-Post plugin from ChatGPT’s Plugins, connect an Instagram Business or Creator account, give ChatGPT the video and ask. It shows you the post and publishes when you approve.

Connect Instagram to a free Upload-Post account

Sign up at app.upload-post.com (no card) and connect Instagram with Instagram’s own login. It has to be a Business or Creator account; a Facebook Page is not needed.

Install the Upload-Post plugin in ChatGPT

Open Plugins in the ChatGPT sidebar, search for Upload-Post, click Install and then Connect. Sign in to Upload-Post in the window that opens and approve the access.

Give ChatGPT the video

Ask for Upload Studio and pick the file from your computer inside ChatGPT, or paste a public link (Google Drive, Dropbox, S3). A plain chat attachment stays inside ChatGPT, so the plugin needs one of these two.

Ask for the Reel and approve it

“@Upload-Post post this to Instagram as a Reel with the caption ‘Spring drop is live’, share it to the feed and schedule it for Friday at 6 pm New York time.” ChatGPT shows what it will do and waits for your OK before posting.

Check that it went live

Ask “did it post?”: the plugin checks the upload status and returns the link to the Reel, or the reason Instagram gave if it failed.

What Instagram accepts

You approve every post

Publishing changes something outside ChatGPT, so ChatGPT treats it as a write action: it shows the caption, the account and the time, and waits for your OK. Reading things, such as your analytics or the list of scheduled posts, needs no approval.

You can change this per plugin in Settings, Plugins: always ask, allow read actions, allow low-risk actions or allow all actions. For a brand account, keep “always ask”.

Why Upload Studio matters

The plugin runs on Upload-Post’s servers, not on your computer, so a file you drop into the chat is not something it can open. Upload Studio is the plugin’s own upload window inside ChatGPT: you pick the video, it goes straight to Upload-Post, and ChatGPT can post it.

A public link works too, and is the easier option for files already in Google Drive, Dropbox or a storage bucket.

When ChatGPT will not post to Instagram

The problems people hit first, and the fix for each.

Upload-Post does not appear in Plugins

OpenAI decides which plugins each plan, workspace and region can use. In a Business or Enterprise workspace an admin may need to allow it first.

ChatGPT says it cannot read the video

The file is only attached to the chat. Ask for Upload Studio to upload it from your computer, or share a public link.

Instagram is not offered when you connect it

The account is personal. Switch it to Business or Creator in Instagram’s settings (free and reversible) and connect again.

The Reel failed

Ask ChatGPT for the status: it returns Instagram’s reason. Most failures are length, size or frame rate outside the limits above.

It posted to the wrong account

Name the profile in your request, for example “under profile bakery”. Upload-Post groups accounts in profiles and the plugin lists them before publishing.

The Instagram connection expired

Instagram sometimes asks you to log in again, for example after a password change. Ask ChatGPT for a connect link and reconnect in one click.

ChatGPT and Instagram: frequently asked questions

Can ChatGPT post to Instagram by itself?

No. ChatGPT has no access to Instagram on its own. It posts through a plugin that holds your Instagram connection: with the official Upload-Post plugin you connect Instagram once, then ask ChatGPT to publish and approve each post.

Can ChatGPT post Reels, carousels and Stories?

Yes, with the Upload-Post plugin: Reels (with cover, collaborators and share to feed), photo carousels, single photos and Stories, now or at a scheduled time.

Do I need a Business account or a Facebook Page?

You need an Instagram Business or Creator account, which is free to switch to. You do not need a Facebook Page, because Upload-Post connects with Instagram Login.

Can I post a video from my computer?

Yes. Ask for Upload Studio and the plugin opens a picker inside ChatGPT that uploads the file. A public link from Google Drive, Dropbox or S3 also works.

Will ChatGPT post without asking me?

Not by default. Posting is a write action, so ChatGPT shows what it is about to do and waits for your approval. You can change the permission level per plugin in Settings, Plugins.

Can ChatGPT schedule Instagram posts?

Yes. Give a date, time and timezone (“Friday at 6 pm New York time”) or ask it to add the post to your posting queue. You can list, change or cancel scheduled posts later from the same chat.

Does ChatGPT see my Instagram password?

No. You connect Instagram on Instagram’s own login page inside Upload-Post, and ChatGPT signs in to Upload-Post with OAuth. The plugin only calls publishing tools.

Is my content used to train OpenAI’s models?

That depends on your ChatGPT plan. OpenAI says data from plugins on Free, Plus, Go and Pro may be used for training when “Improve the model for everyone” is on, and that Business, Enterprise and Edu data is not used by default.

Can I add Upload-Post as my own MCP server instead?

Yes, on Business, Enterprise and Edu workspaces: Plugins, then +, then Add custom MCP server with https://mcp.upload-post.com/mcp. Full write access for custom servers is on those plans, on the web.
