What Are Claude Skills?

Claude skills (Anthropic's Agent Skills) are folders that give Claude know-how it loads only when a task needs it.

A SKILL.md file

Every skill has a SKILL.md with a name and description in its frontmatter, then instructions. It can bundle scripts and reference docs.

Loaded on demand

Claude sees only each skill's name and description until your request matches one. Then it reads the full instructions, so installing many skills costs almost no context.

Claude Code and claude.ai

In Claude Code, skills live in ~/.claude/skills/ or a project's .claude/skills/. In claude.ai, upload a skill as a ZIP under Customize > Skills.

What are Claude skills?
A Claude skill (Anthropic calls them Agent Skills) is a folder with a SKILL.md file: YAML frontmatter with a name and a description, followed by instructions, plus optional scripts and reference files. Claude only reads the name and description up front and loads the rest when a request matches, so you can install many skills without filling its context. Skills work in Claude Code, claude.ai and the Claude API.
What is the difference between Claude skills and Claude Code skills?
They use the same SKILL.md format. The difference is where they live: in Claude Code, skills are folders on your machine (~/.claude/skills/ for personal skills or .claude/skills/ inside a project), while in claude.ai you upload a skill as a ZIP file from Customize > Skills. Skills do not sync between the two, so install them in each place you use.

Can I use these skills in claude.ai?
Yes. Package a skill folder as a ZIP and upload it in claude.ai under Customize > Skills (code execution must be enabled in Settings > Capabilities). For publishing from claude.ai, the simplest route is to add the Upload-Post MCP server, https://mcp.upload-post.com/mcp, under Settings > Connectors, which gives Claude the posting tools directly.
What is the difference between a Claude skill and an MCP server?
An MCP server gives Claude tools it can call, such as upload_video or get_analytics. A skill gives Claude know-how: which tools to use, in what order and with which parameters for a job like a comment-to-DM funnel or a daily Shorts pipeline. They work best together: the Upload-Post skills route their API calls through the Upload-Post MCP server when it is connected.
Which social media platforms do the Claude Code skills support?

Claude's file upload list covers documents (PDF, DOCX, CSV, TXT and more) and images (JPEG, PNG, GIF, WebP); video formats such as MP4 are not on it. To publish a video you do not need to attach it: give Claude Code the path to a local file, or give Claude a public URL, and the Upload-Post skill or connector uploads it to TikTok, Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts and more.
Can Claude make Instagram Reels?
Claude can publish them. With the Upload-Post Instagram skill, Claude Code posts Instagram Reels, photos, carousels and Stories from your terminal. Ask it to post a video as a Reel with your caption and it handles Instagram's container-based publishing flow.
